With one of the worst rates of violence and murders in Cape Town, Nyanga inspired the pilot ‘Overcoming Dangerous Defaults’. The pilot aimed to help young people choose safe weekend evening activity options and overcome the tendency to spend time in unsafe environments, via a computer-based activity planning tool, the Safety Tool—that helped nudge them towards less risky activities. Given the high incidence of road fatalities in the Western Cape, the Provincial Government teamed up with ideas42 to improve road safety and decrease the number of road accidents. The pilot developed a campaign in which all drivers were eligible for a cash-prize lottery—as long as they maintained clean records—with the aim to nudge behaviour change by tapping into Western Cape residents’ competitive spirit.
