Over the past few weeks, the BI4GOV team in the Western Cape Government connected with leading behavioural insights (BI) practitioners from across the globe, hailing from research organisations, government, academia, and multilateral organisations alike, and we are now releasing the findings through a series of articles here on our blog.

On 6th October 2019, a collection of global players in education came together at the Qudwa conference in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE) to share learnings and discuss the most prolific trends in the space. Ammaarah Martinus, Director of Policy, Research and Analysis, as well as BI4Gov team lead in the Western Cape Government, was delighted to deliver a one-hour masterclass on Western Cape’s Growth Mindset initiative.

On 27 and 28 September 2018, the Western Cape Government (WCG) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) hosted 250 behavioural practitioners and policymakers from 21 countries who represented national and sub-national governments, regulators, NGOs, academia, private sector and multi-national bodies at the Behavioural Insights Conference Making a Real Difference: Nudging for Policy Change.

The BI4Gov Nudgeathon produced a wealth of ideas from the five diverse teams. A lot of the positive feedback - online and at the event - was focused on the structure of the Nudgeathon: the interdisciplinary approach and the inclusion of stakeholders from across the board.

In April 2019, Dr Umar Taj, an expert in the field of behavioural science and decision making, will be coming to Cape Town to implement BI4Gov’s first Nudgeathon.

The World Bank wrote an article about our recent study on Growth Mindset, in which they detailed how the intervention, delivered with classroom technology, had big impacts on student attitudes towards learning, and student math grades.
